I'm Deb Perkins

 When I co-founded Cat Perkins, I realized my co-founder and I had a truly innovative idea for a woman’s travel shoe, one for which we received two patents. However, we had zero experience in the shoe industry. Aside from a summer job at The Athlete’s Foot in high school, I had never worked in retail!

We knew that we needed to connect with a “super advisor”—someone with broad and deep experience selling in all sales channels before we could succeed. 

That was the first of a long list of knowledge deficits. We’d never done product development. We'd never manufactured shoes. We'd never opened a brick-and-mortar store. We'd never dealt with inventory.

HOW?

My team and I built an advisory board that included a supermodel, the former head of Saks Fifth Avenue, New York (who created the world's largest shoe department), an investment banker /accountant who was part of the all-star team that took Tory Burch public. We also partnered with a venture capitalist (VC) who introduced us to investors, and an executive with a spectacular career in the fashion industry. This team knew everyone I needed to meet.

Early in my career, I'd never have been able to create the type of advisory board we made with Cat Perkins. In my late 20’s, I was the only female director (besides the head of HR) at a Fortune 50 company.  I didn’t feel safe acknowledging what I didn’t know.  

When I was the CEO of Cat Perkins, I learned to ask for help. We couldn’t survive without some star talent. I knew we would succeed only by getting expert advice from people who knew more than us. For my growth and success, I’d have to ask for it.

I started by talking to anyone I could. Although I present myself as an extrovert, I’d rather sit at my computer than ask strangers to meet me for coffee. By pushing myself out of my comfort zone and applying fine-tuned strategies, I developed a process to connect with top talent. Once I made a connection, they'd introduce me to other important people. Eventually, they'd join our team.
