WHAT WORKED

When I co-founded Cat Perkins, I realized my co-founder and I had a truly innovative idea for a woman’s travel shoe, one for which we received two patents. However, we had zero experience in the shoe industry. Aside from a summer job at The Athlete’s Foot in high school, I had never worked in retail!

We were able to bootstrap our business for the first couple years while we developed our product and set up our eComm site.  Then we realized that we needed to raise money and generate some working capital.

We were crafty.  We had serious supply chain issues and a direct to consumer model without much consumer data. 

EARLY ON: We took some risks and experienced real success holding pre-launch parties around the country with size 7 samples. At the first of these, we sold out of most of our styles and sizes.  Our first customers paid in full and graciously waited 7 months or more to receive their shoes.

LATER: We tried multiple types of crowdfunding, met with Angel Investors, VCs and friends and family to raise our first round of just under $1 million dollars.

I created this class so that you don't waste months on things that end up not working...so that you can avoid waking up at 3am worrying that you can't make payroll.  

WHAT DIDN'T WORK?

We spent too much time researching and going through the motions on funding methods that would never have worked for our product type and business model. 

Months were spent going deep into crowdfunding and signing on with one of the best crowdfunding marketing companies around, only to realize that we couldn't possibly deliver our product in the way that was required.  

For early stage entrepreneurs, losing months on something that won't work, and having to start all over, was painful.

I started by talking to anyone I could. Although I present as an extrovert, I’d rather sit at my computer than ask strangers to meet me for coffee.
